December 2024 | Update 3: TSC-at- Home | Bringing TSC Directly into Foster Families’ Backyards
There’s likely not a more convenient place for foster families to connect with nature in ways that bring healing & connection to their lives than their own backyards. So, as part of our “pivot,” TSC is helping foster families get outside more at home in 2 primary ways:
1. Landscape Design Consultation Services: Leveraging my experience as a landscape designer with Redeem Your Ground, I’m offering landscape design consultation services to foster families free-of-charge.
As we walk & talk through their yards, we discuss ways to optimize their outdoor spaces, come up with a plan of attack, and then I’ll potentially tee-up installers who can bring things to life.
So, if you’re a foster family (or know someone who is) who would potentially benefit from something like this, please let us know!
2. TSC Backyard Mini-Makeovers: I’m probably most excited about this one! TSC is partnering with foster care ministries and organizations to do backyard mini-makeovers for foster families in their communities. Think of it as an old-fashioned “barn raising” of sorts.
After I meet with the foster family, I develop a design & project plan and then one weekend TSC and a group of folks from that foster family’s community invade their backyard and transform it into a place that provides greater life, peace, and beauty for their family.
And not only will these mini-makeovers directly impact the lives of the foster families, they will also provide an experiential opportunity to build a deeper community of support who can walk through the foster care journey with them. And if you know anything about foster care, having the support of others is HUGE!
And by the way, as you’ll read in Update 10, it’s our Mini-Makeover efforts that Chic-fil-A has graciously supported financially. We’re so, so thankful for the grant and their support in general. Both have been a huge boost of encouragement!
There’s so much more to all of this, but that’s it in a nutshell. So, please let me know if you’d like to learn more. We have a few of these projects in the works and plan to do at least 3 or more in the next 6 to 9 months.
As I said, we’re really excited!

PPS: And by the way, we had an awesome Backyard Mini-Makeover in mid-October for a foster-to-adoption family whose son has had a significant impact on me personally … and therefore TSC! Stay tuned for the next TSC Newsletter where I’ll highlight what we did and how it impacted the family and those who served them. I think you’ll be encouraged.
