Creating Space for Foster Care
Foster care needs space—space to heal, space to belong, space to be understood, and space to be supported.
Creating that space means making room in our hearts, our minds, our days, and our communities for children and caregivers carrying more than most of us can see or could even imagine. TSC creates this space in practical, relational, and community-shaping ways — giving foster families places to breathe, connect, and grow stronger together.
Physical Space
Outdoor environments matter — especially for families navigating stress, change, and trauma. Many foster families lack access to spaces that are usable, welcoming, or designed with their needs in mind. TSC helps create simple, trauma-informed outdoor places through consultations, Yard Refresh Days, Backyard Makeovers, and Mini-TSC Sites — turning underused yards and other spaces into environments where families can slow down, feel grounded, and enjoy being together.
Emotional Space
Children and caregivers need room to feel, process, and be met with compassion. Healing from trauma doesn’t happen in crowded schedules or rushed conversations — it happens when children feel safe enough to express what’s inside and caregivers have margin to support them. TSC helps create this emotional space through calming environments, predictable rhythms, and experiences that allow families to breathe and be present with each other.
Relational Space
Healthy relationships grow when there is room to connect without pressure or expectation. Children in care need safe, predictable interactions; caregivers need a supportive network; and birth families need opportunities to reconnect in calm settings. TSC creates this relational space through gatherings, visits, shared outdoor experiences & spaces, and rhythms that help families feel seen, supported, and never on their own.
Communal Space
Foster care needs shared places that feel like theirs — somewhere families can show up, exhale, and belong, not as guests but as part of a community. And the broader community wants to help; they just need accessible ways to do it. TSC creates this communal space by bringing partners together and shaping shared home bases — gatherings, mini-sites, makeovers, and collaborative projects — where foster families and those who support them can connect, serve, and feel at home together.
Awareness Space
Awareness brings light to the foster care story — helping communities see what’s often overlooked. Many people care deeply but don’t understand the realities, pressures, and hopes of foster families. By providing opportunities to engage and share clear information and real stories, TSC helps foster care move out of the shadows and into the heart of the community. When understanding grows, compassion does too — creating a brighter, more supportive environment for children and the families who care for them.
A Space of Time
Healing requires time — stillness, margin, and moments that aren’t rushed. Foster families often live at an exhausting pace, juggling appointments, transitions, and emotional load. Children in care rarely get the quiet, unhurried time that supports regulation, healing and growth. TSC encourages this space of time by providing restful outdoor moments, slowed-down experiences, and service projects that give families back precious hours that they desperately need.
When space is created for foster care — practically, relationally, and within the broader community — families are supported, children have more opportunities to heal, and people across the community can step into roles that truly matter. This is a grand vision, we know. But TSC exists to do whatever we can to help make it a reality.
